Paul Haffner was born in London in 1954 and was educated
at St. John's College, Southsea and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he
read physics. After seminary studies at the Venerable English College and the
Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, he was ordained priest for the diocese
of Portsmouth in 1981. From 1982 to 1984 Fr. Haffner was a curate in Aldershot.
From 1984 to 1987 he was in Rome preparing his doctoral thesis which was published
under the title Faith in God the Creator in Relation to Modern Science According
to the works of S.L. Jaki. Between 1987-91 he was a lecturer at the Pontifical
Gregorian University, the Pontifical Institute Regina Mundi and the Seminary
of the Missionaries of the Faith in Rome, and worked part-time at the Pontifical
Academy of Sciences. In 1991 his book Creation and Scientific Creativity: A
Study in the Thought of S.L. Jaki was published. From 1992 to 1993 Fr. Haffner
worked at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and continued
lecturing on science and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.
From 1994 he has also been lecturing at the Pontifical Lateran University and
the Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum of the Legionaries of Christ. His book The
Mystery of Creation was published in 1995.
Joseph Kirwan was born in India in 1910, the son of
a Rifle Brigade Sergeant Major. He was educated at St. Mary's Elementary School,
Sunderland and Plater College, Oxford (the Catholic Workers' College). His MA
degree course in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St Catherine's College,
Oxford was interrupted by wartime service with the infantry in Burma. He was
tutor and bursar of Plater College from 1948-62 and Principal from 1962-77.
He was a founder member of the executive of the European Union of Christian
Democratic Workers, based in Brussels. He translated, with commentary, the encyclicals
Rerum Novarum, Mater et Magistra and Laborem Exercens. He translated The Church
and Social Justice by Calvez and Perrin, Prayer as a Political Problem by Danielou
and The Challenge of Hunger by Drogat.
Robert Whelan was educated at the John Fisher School,
Purley and Trinity College Cambridge, where he read English. He wrote and produced
a series of educational videos for the Family Education Trust including The
Truth About AIDS, The Great Population Hoax, Facing Facts on Population and
The Three R's of Family Life. His publications include Mounting Greenery, Broken
Homes and Battered Children, Choices in Childbearing, Teaching Sex in Schools
and (with Roger Cummins) Making a Lottery of Good Causes. He has written articles
on the environmental movement for The Spectator, Economic Affairs and other
periodicals. He is Assistant Director of the Health and Welfare Unit of the
Institute of Economic Affairs.
