Professor Lord Acton

This lecture was delivered at Cambridge University on March 16, 1995 by Professor
Owen Chadwick in celebration of the 100 years since Lord Acton assumed the Regius
Chair of Modern History. The author, a distinguished Acton scholar who himself
served as Regius Professor, details the history of Acton's tenure at Cambridge,
including the intrigue surrounding his appointment, his lectures, his work on
the Cambridge Modern History, his philosophy of history, and the influence
he had on the writing of history in Britain.
Owen Chadwick was born in 1916 and from 1947 taught history at Cambridge University,
where at 28 years he was Capital Master of Selwyn College. From 1968 to 1983
he was Regius Professor of Modern History. His many books include, The Secularization
of the European Revolution, and The Spirit of the Oxford Movement.
He is General Editor of the Penguin History of the Church Series to which he
has contributed two volumes.
