IREF
For the fourth consecutive year IREF, the Institute for Research on Economic and Fiscal Issues, has launched an essay contest to promote research on tax-related issues. This fourth contest proceeds along new rules aiming at attracting participation from a larger set of young students and scholars. This year the awards offered to the three prize-winners add up to €12 000. The topic is "European Tax: Good and Bad". For more information please visit the IREF website.
Foundation for Research on Economics and the Environment
The Foundation for Research on Economics and the Environment (FREE) in Bozeman , MT announces a new conference series for religious leaders. The first program, Environmental Stewardship & Climate Change , will be held September 9-13, 2007 at the Elkhorn Ranch near Big Sky, MT. Global warming is a critically important issue. Economic analysis can help design policies that further environmental ends while avoiding unintended, negative consequences. FREE's conference will foster a respectful, productive dialogue as we consider how economic principles can help reconcile the oft-competing perspectives of ecology, ethics, and social welfare. The Philanthropy Roundtable
The Philanthropy Roundtable, a national association of individual donors, foundations, donor-advised funds, and other grantmakers, is seeking a director of a new program area highlighting philanthropic strategies and solutions which help people to help themselves. This position will be available in September 2007.
The responsibilities of the director of programs in helping people to help themselves will include organizing and hosting three to five public conferences for philanthropists across the nation per year, organizing private, customized seminars for high-net-worth donors to help them improve the effectiveness of their giving in this field, commissioning, producing, and disseminating an electronic newsletter and other publications on highly effective philanthropy that helps people help themselves, building and managing a database, and actively recruiting new philanthropists who seek to advance our principles in this field.
The position will require substantial domestic travel. It is preferred but not necessary that the director be based in Washington . Qualifications for the position include, at least three years of significant experience in business, government, or the nonprofit world working to expand opportunity for the poor and needy, excellent program evaluation skills, a broad interest in philanthropy, excellent “people” skills, including the ability to win the confidence of senior business leaders, good writing and public speaking skills, a bachelors and ideally a masters degree; and, the entrepreneurial spirit to build and run a new program.

Observatoire de la Finance
The Observatoire de la Finance (www.obsfin.ch) is a non-profit Swiss foundation dedicated to promote and encourage ethical practice in financial institutions. The foundation organizes meetings involving institutions and individuals from the world of finance. The Observatoire de la Finance has just launched a new prize to encourage ethics in finance, the *Robin Cosgrove Prize*, which aims at promoting ethical awareness among young people in banking and related industries. The prize will award USD 20,000 for creative papers setting out projects or proposals for innovative ways to promote ethics in finance and banking. It honours the vision of the investment banker Robin Cosgrove, died at age 31, who believed that a major barrier to economic development was the absence of integrity and ethical practice in banking and financial systems.
